Koliada by K. Trutovsky

Don’t feel like coming out of your vacation slumber? Blame your Slavic ancestors—they wouldn’t even think about lifting a finger for work until January 19th, minimum. For centuries, this time of year was all about chilling out, celebrating, and diving into some next-level spiritual vibes. Welcome to Svyatki—a two-week stretch of sacred rest and community magic that’s basically the OG self-care routine.

Svyatki ran from Christmas (January 7) to Epiphany (January 19) and was packed with traditions that fused Christian and pre-Christian rituals into one epic party. Think no work, no stress—just honoring ancestors, singing your heart out during Kolyada, and maybe dabbling in some mystical fortune-telling. It was the ultimate reset, where even the spirit world got involved to keep things interesting.

During these two weeks, the line between worlds blurred, making it the perfect time for rituals that were as profound as they were fun. Whether you were singing carols with your neighbors or peering into a mirror in the banya to catch a glimpse of your future spouse, Svyatki had something for everyone. It was about connection—to each other, to the past, and to the natural rhythms of life.

So buckle up, because we’re diving headfirst into the wild, mystical, and oh-so-relatable traditions of Svyatki. From ancient divination practices to communal celebrations, this article will show you why these rituals still matter and how they can inspire us to embrace a little magic in our modern lives.

A brief recap of past articles related to the subject:

We’ve already looked at such figures as Ded Moroz , his origins and history. We’ve discovered the importance of wheat as an important symbol of abundance and protection for the family. Now it’s time to dive into the fascinating tradition that is Svyatki, which we briefly touched on around Halloween.
