The scandalous mystic Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was a figure of global infamy, the subject of rumors and intrigue that rival those of modern celebrities. His complex personality merged genuine kindness and generosity with vices like alcohol and sex addiction. He was both a mystic and a manipulator, displaying a genuine affection for the common people of Russia while also harboring a desire for fame and luxury.
His last name Rasputin serves him amazingly well, as the meaning of the words with the same root are “распутье” (crossroads), and “распутник” (someone who leads a sexually promiscuous lifestyle).
Born on January 21, 1869, in the village of Pokrovskoye, Rasputin was the son of a farmer. His mystical abilities were apparent from a young age; it was said that he could heal dying horses simply by touch. To cultivate an image of a wise old monk, he often lied about his age
Rasputin's life took a decisive turn after a visit to a monastery in Verkhoturye, where he experienced ritualistic religion for the first time. Despite his father's disapproval, who dismissed his son's spiritual quest as laziness, Rasputin continued his wandering.
